When two parents decide to move forward with Divorce, it is important to consider the overall impact this process will have on any minor children involved. For those who do not know, May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. In today’s society, mental health is becoming less taboo to discuss among adults. However, children’s mental health should not be overlooked as part of this conversation.
Our Family Law Clients trust us to help them navigate different aspects of their unique situation. If our Client has minor children, we encourage him or her to prioritize the overall wellbeing of the kids, which includes their mental health. Examples of what this could look like are as follows:
Look into counseling: Minor children who are in the middle of their parents’ Divorce may feel afraid to open up to family during such a vulnerable time. Speaking with another adult who offers an objective perspective through therapy may be helpful for children to identify their feelings, concerns, etc.
Maintain a sense of routine: Change is the one constant in life. Divorce often involves many changes–some drastic and some minor. There may be certain things your child is used to doing together as a family. As a parent, it is important to recognize which parts of your home life can be carried over during and after your Divorce. Routine provides a sense of normalcy and stability for children who may otherwise be struggling with a major shift in their family dynamic.
Create a safe environment for big emotions: Younger children may not understand the reasoning behind your Divorce. Even though you and your Former Spouse may be doing everything in your power to provide support, tantrums and confusion may still occur. Rather than being quick to anger, allow your children to express their emotions freely and safely. By doing so, you have an opportunity to practice patience and grace while earning your child’s trust.
