June is recognized as Men’s Mental Health Month. Due to the stigma and lack of support surrounding men’s mental health, those who experience divorce may struggle with navigating the emotions that accompany the end of their marriage.
There are several ways for men to prioritize their mental health during a family law matter.
1. Be intentional with meditation and prayer. Going through a divorce may lead to conflict and/or feelings of uncertainty. Beginning each day with quiet time to embrace your thoughts and pray may allow you to think more clearly and lead with grace.
2. Consider therapy. Connecting with a licensed mental health professional could help with acknowledging your pain, grief, fear, or even hope for the future. Speaking with someone who has an objective perspective may encourage you to self-reflect and move forward peacefully.
3. Seek community. Are you active in a local church? Do you play sports regularly? Don’t be afraid to lean on your friends and family. Perhaps there are other men in your life who have walked a similar path and are willing to lend a listening ear or share insight on their own experience.
4. Determine your why. Who or what is your motivation to move forward post-divorce? Are there minor children involved? As providers, men often think about anyone who will be impacted by their actions and choices. While your marriage may be ending, a new season of your life will begin.
